The Climate Hope Affiliates Team has completed its training and jumped into action. We have a new name – CHAMP (Climate Hope Affiliate Metrowest Program) – and about a dozen active members from Edwards as well as other faith communities.
We have already had an informal meeting with Rep. Katherine Clark’s legislative aide, and we are working to schedule more meetings with our members of Congress to press for stronger action on climate. We are particularly focused on trying to save the clean energy tax cuts from elimination in the current budget reconciliation bill.
To build momentum for stronger action, we have taken on writing letters to the editor in the local press.
To date we have already had five letters published – in the Metrowest News, Haverhill Tribune, and Boston Globe. We are currently leading a campaign to get friends and relatives in key states to call their Senators who might be on the fence about the budget bill to stop these disastrous cuts to clean energy as well as other critical needs.
If you want to get in on all this action – and move from climate despair to action and hope – we are always ready to welcome new CHAMPs. Our summer meeting schedule follows, and you can contact Ronda Yeomans at MRCE.Yeomans@verizon.net for more information.
If you don’t have time to add a meeting to your calendar, another thing you can do to “activate” yourself is to join the Edwards Church Action Alerts email list. This group is moderated by Mary Memmott from the Environmental Justice Team, but it is open to all. It is a google group for posting or receiving messages about opportunities to stand up against injustice and for a more equitable, inclusive, democratic, and environmentally-sound world. These include in-person political actions or by contacting elected officials.
If you have questions, please email Mary Memmott at memmottm@gmail.com. The email for the group is edwards-action-alerts@googlegroups.com.
