“The memory of the righteous is a blessing…”–Proverbs 10:7a
We have 3 grandsons–Owen, Declan & Emmett. They each hold a very special place in our hearts. Over the years I’ve had more opportunity to be present in Owen’s life.
I’m reminded that even in life’s challenging times there is joy & laughter that feeds us. The time & memories that I share with the boys feeds me in a way that nothing else does.
Many years ago, when he was very small (Owen is now 17), our daughter started work at 5 AM. She would bring Owen to our house, put him back to bed. He & I would start our days together. Breakfast, getting dressed, Owen to daycare or nursery school & me to work by 11:00.
We had “Grammy Tuesdays” on my day off & would often have breakfast at J&M Diner. Sometimes he came to church with me. Our activities were varied & included home cooked food, sledding or exploring in the backyard, rides in the wheelbarrow while gardening, making cookies or picking flowers for his mom. We had ordinary time together & I loved every minute, well, most every minute.
As he got older, time together turned to rides to elementary school. Rides included practicing spelling or vocabulary, sometimes math facts or state capitals. My driving evolved to Grampy driving, & that was an entirely different way to share in his life. Then, he could ride the bus from home. How I missed the regularity of ordinary time together.
Now he’s in high school & drives himself. His voice is deeper, he still gives great hugs, & he has a wonderful sense of humor. And, he remembers times that we’ve shared, how to make “Grammy water” & loves steamed brown bread.
It has been such a joy & a privilege to participate in all these phases of Owen’s life. I will treasure these memories.
I will also cherish the special times with each one of our boys.
For these blessings, I am most grateful.
May we cherish memories of ordinary time together. Amen.
