Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.–Colossians 3:16
It started with Jane Ezbicki, as the choir rehearsed before the service. “It’s almost Debbie’s birthday.” she said, “We should sing.” And so they did, in beautiful harmony!
And then, during Celebrations and Concerns, Ronda Yeomans celebrated that my birthday was coming up, and also that my 30 year anniversary at the church had arrived. “We should sing,” someone cried out. And so you all did–a second Happy Birthday chorus!
Then, after the parade and “This Little Light of Mine” in three languages and some pony rides, we went indoors for refreshments. There was a cupcake-birthday-cake and Peggy’s famous vegan chocolate cake, with Happy Birthday Debbie written on it. “We should sing,” someone said yet again. And so you all did–a third Happy Birthday chorus, this time in at least two languages!
Then there were cards–birthday cards and pastoral anniversary cards–, with such thoughtful and meaningful and joyous messages. And there were conversations, memories from thirty years ago, recollections of good times and also sharing in tough times together.
It was striking to celebrate 64 years of life and 30 years as pastor at Edwards Church on the same day. I’ve been at Edwards Church almost half my life! Wow! And such a rich and joyous half it has been. I am so blessed to be part of this congregation. Thank you.
Thank you, God. Amen.
