April / May Events Recap
On April 26, JLA hosted Rev. Dr. Karen Nell Smith as she led the worship service and, along with Laura Beck, led a sing-along of activist songs that for the most part originated in Minnesota.
On April 12, Metrowest Sings Out held a sing-along of some of their activist songs and raised $1,000 for CASA.
On May 3, some members of Edwards Church walked for hunger at Cushing Park. The effort raised more than $3,000 for Project Bread to provide food for those in need.
OUT MetroWest hosted a Trivia Night on May 1, and Edwards had a team of 8 people who participated. They reported that it was a very fun night.
On Saturday, May 9, Debbie, Fran, and Heather participated in the Mother’s Day Car Rally at MCI-Framingham.
Upcoming Events
The Gay Pride Flag raising will take place on May 31 at 2 pm and Debbie will be the MC of that event. After the flag raising ceremony, OUT MetroWest will have a festival in the downtown common.
A Juneteenth celebration will be held on June 20, 1-6 pm, in Framingham at Farm Pond Park (100 Dudley St). It will feature food, vendors, games, activities, arts & crafts, picture booth, music, raffle giveaway, scholarship awards, and live performances. There is no charge for food, beverages, or activities.
Other Business
We discussed ways to help with a world at war and support for mothers and children in Palestine and Iran. Perhaps an after-church discussion, postcards, looking into UCC programs, Just Peace program, deeper discussion on restorative justice or Just Peace Players restorative justice circle. Debbie will be doing a 3-Sunday sermon series on “Blessed are the Peacemakers.” Heather and Debbie will lead a Tea and Conversation gathering after the third sermon, on May 17.
We were updated on the progress being made by the 200th Anniversary Team for our yearlong celebration.
Climate Hope participated in the Framingham Earth Day celebration on April 25. They felt they had a good presence at the event and spoke with several people about what they are doing.
